This book, in my opinion, is the best introduction to Faulkner possible where the reader has a chance to become accustomed to the sentence structure (to some extent: the longest sentence in The Unvanquished doesn't seem to run for even a page, making this quite simplistic by Faulknerian standards) without having to worry about an overly confused by: 2.

William Faulkner, one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, was born in New Albany, Mississippi, on Septem He published his first book, The Marble Faun, inbut it is as a literary chronicler of life in the Deep South--particularly in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, the setting for several of his novels--that he is most highly regarded.3/5(5).

The Unvanquished, by William Faulkner, is a novel overflowing with violence. Set in the south during the tumultuous years of the Civil War. Bayard, whose father (Colonel Sartoris), is at the center. Though Faulkner’s The Unvanquished is set during the Civil War, another war is being fought simultaneously.

This second war is not one of guns and thievery, but one of beliefs. It is a conflict between two philosophies: idealism and pragmatism. This war rages on throughout the novel, but is decided by one event: Bayard’s decision.

Unvanquished is a monumental work of stunning detail and impressive depth. In it, Peter Hetherington chronicles the life of Marshal Joseph Pilsudski, the soldier who almost single-handedly resurrected Poland from the ashes of the Great War in and then led its armies to throw back the Bolshevik hordes of Soviet Russia.4/5.

The Unvanquished, Faulkner's tenth novel (and seventh to be set in Yoknapatawpha County) tells the earlier history of the Sartoris family during and immediately after the Civil family, based closely on Faulkner's own real-life forebears, were key in Flags in the Dust, Faulkner's first Yoknapatawpha novel (and third overall), which was originally published in a severely cut version.
